Measure J Commission Seeking Proposals For $6 Million In Community-Initiated Project Funding

Palm Springs, CA

The City of Palm Springs Measure J Commission is inviting residents, neighborhood organizations, businesses, and non-profits to submit proposals for a share of $6 million allocated for community-initiated projects funded by Measure J tax dollars. These projects can be either City-managed or non-profit managed.

One such potential project involves a partnership that developed late last year between the Palm Springs Tribune and the Tool Shed, who recently built out a large outdoor patio. The Palm Springs Tribune and the Tool Shed with sign offs from neighboring businesses: Townie Bagel, Gear, Offramp Leathers, Q Trading, and Little Shop of Treasures are working with the City of Palm Springs to add diagonal parking and street trees to E. Sunny Dunes Rd. to both enhance the street while creating additional parking for the local business clientele. See diagram below:

The planning for the project began in November of 2023 however, there are more steps to go through before this project is approved by the city and no timeline has been set.

Applications are already available at palmspringsca.gov/measurejcommunityprojects. The deadline to apply is Monday, September 30, by 5:30 p.m.

Measure J, a one-cent sales tax increase approved by Palm Springs voters in 2011, generates revenue to maintain local community services and support economic revitalization of the City’s downtown. Over the past decade, Measure J funds have supported numerous transformative community projects, including extensive street paving, upgrades to the Dog Park, Police and Fire stations, restoration of historic sites like the Welwood Murray Memorial Library and Plaza Theatre, and the development of parks and recreational facilities such as the Downtown Park.

Hard copies of the application can be picked up at various City locations, including City Hall, the Palm Springs Public Library, Welwood Murray Memorial Library, Demuth Park Community Center, James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center, and the Leisure Center at Palm Springs Parks and Recreation.

Completed applications can be submitted online, by mail, or in person to: City of Palm Springs, Attn: Melissa Sanchez, Finance Department, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs, CA 92262.

Proposals meeting the Commission’s criteria will be recommended to the City Council for final approval.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to bring forward new and innovative community projects that have the potential to transform Palm Springs,” said Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein, former Chair of the Measure J Commission. “My City Council colleagues and I encourage anyone interested in obtaining funding to get creative, think out of the box, and submit proposals that will further enhance the quality of life in our city.”
