Palm Springs, CA
Tonight, in a closed session, Palm Springs City Council decided to move the Marilyn Monroe statue in a win to the The Committee To Relocate Marilyn (CReMa) and its founder, Trina Turk. The group has opposed closing down vehicular traffic on Museum Way for Marilyn.
The Mayor of Palm Springs Jeff Bernstein said in a statement,
“The City of Palm Springs is pleased to announce that, during today’s closed session, the City Council reached an agreement in principle with P.S. Resorts and CReMa to relocate the Forever Marilyn sculpture to a location to be determined in the Downtown Park and move forward with the street vacation. The City expects to have finalization of the specific location within the Downtown Park in the next 30 days. The City working with all of the partners will proceed as promptly as is responsible to resolve the remaining logistical issues. The street vacation public hearing will move forward this evening as planned and will incorporate the terms of this agreement. The City Council is very pleased to have found a satisfactory solution to this issue, which has divided so many within our community.”
Where exactly in the Downtown Park is unknown as of yet.
The Marilyn Monroe statue was purchased by PS Resorts from Seward Johnson Atelier in February 2021 for approximately $1 Million Dollars. It was originally meant to stay at its original location on Museum Way for 3 years but that time is expiring.
Since it’s original installation, controversy has ensued about not just the location of Marilyn but its risque design that was made to recreate the film “The Seven Year Itch,” made in 1955. In the scene, Marilyn Monroe’s white dress gets pushed up due to the wind created by the Manhattan subway.
Tourists however can be seen taking pictures with the statue on a regular basis.
