You may have noticed the iconic Stevie Nicks, age 76, recently performing on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. She sang her newest song “Lighthouse” inspired by the upheaval following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which has led to 20 states with restrictive abortion access for women across the country.
In a heartfelt announcement on Instagram, the legendary singer, who has also endorsed Kamala Harris for President with fellow musical icons Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, shared the song’s poignant backstory. She wrote, “I began writing this song a few months after Roe v. Wade was overturned. It felt like overnight, people were asking, ‘What can we do as a collective force?’ For me, it was to write a song.”
Despite her busy schedule on the road, Nicks found inspiration one morning while watching the news. A particular newscaster’s words resonated deeply with her, illuminating the implications of the loss of Roe v. Wade. “I wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night,” she recounted, noting the date as September 6, 2022.
Since then, she has dedicated herself to perfecting “Lighthouse,” reflecting on its significance. “This may be the most important thing I ever do—to stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters, and the men who love them. This is an anthem.”

(In a Facebook post endorsing Kamala Harris, Stevie Nicks wrote, “As my friend Taylor Swift so eloquently stated, now is the time to research and choose the candidate that speaks to you and your beliefs. Only 54 days left until the election. Make sure you are registered to vote! Your vote in this election may be one of the most important things you ever do. https://vote.gov/ Love, Stevie Nicks Childless Dog Lady”)
