One victim was in critical condition, while the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Both victims have since been released from the hospital and are recovering at home.

Detectives conducted an in-depth investigation, utilizing surveillance footage and witness accounts, which led to identifying Felipe Vargas, a 20-year-old suspect, as the individual responsible for firing the weapon.
Suspect Felipe Vargas
On January 2, 2025, PSPD detectives, supported by the Desert Regional SWAT Team, executed a search warrant at a residence in North Palm Springs. Vargas was apprehended without incident and subsequently booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio on two counts of attempted murder (PC 664/187(a)).
The operation underscored the PSPD’s innovative use of technology. A drone was deployed during the execution of the warrant, providing vital assistance in ensuring a safe and effective outcome. This advanced tool has once again demonstrated its value in enhancing public safety operations.
The Palm Springs Police Detective Bureau commends the exceptional investigative work of its detectives and the cooperation of downtown businesses, whose support was instrumental in identifying Vargas as the suspect.
Chief of Police Andy Mills emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation, stating:
“This arrest underscores the department’s commitment to public safety and holding those who commit violent acts accountable. We are grateful for the partnership of our local businesses, the dedication of our detectives, and the effectiveness of drone technology in bringing this case to a successful resolution.”
