Palm Springs, CA
The Coachella Valley business community is reeling after Silvercrest CEO and founder William “Billy” Rodriguez was formally charged with murder, hit-and-run causing death, and driving with a suspended license in connection with a 2024 fatal collision that claimed the life of 60-year-old Christina Barrington.
Rodriguez, 47, was released from custody Thursday after posting $2 million bail, according to county jail records. He pleaded not guilty to all charges during his arraignment earlier this week and is scheduled to return to court on October 24 at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
Crash Details and Investigation
Authorities allege that Rodriguez struck Barrington while she was riding a scooter near E. Palm Canyon Drive and Bankside Drive on October 11, 2024. Investigators say his vehicle dragged the scooter while fleeing the scene, triggering an extensive police search. Rodriguez was later identified as the suspect after forensic evidence linked the vehicle to him.
Prosecutors with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office argued that Rodriguez poses a danger to the public, citing a history of driving under suspension following a 2013 DUI conviction. Prosecutor Karen Salas told the court that Rodriguez had continued to drive for years without a valid license, even registering two vehicles in his name during that period.
Although Judge Dean Benjamini granted bail, he imposed strict conditions, including a prohibition on alcohol, driving, and out-of-state travel.
Community and Business Fallout
Rodriguez’s arrest has sent shockwaves through Palm Springs and the broader Coachella Valley, where Silvercrest has long been a prominent corporate name. The company is known for its sponsorships of major venues and events, including Acrisure Arena, and for its generous donations to local charities and community initiatives.
In the wake of the charges, several organizations have already distanced themselves from Silvercrest, citing reputational concerns. Others are withholding judgment until more information is available, adopting a wait-and-see approach as the legal process unfolds.
Ongoing Questions
The unfolding case has raised questions about corporate accountability and public image in the region’s tight-knit business community. With Rodriguez’s next court appearance set for later this month, local leaders and organizations will be closely watching developments that could further affect partnerships, sponsorships, and Silvercrest’s standing in the community.
