Palm Springs Offers Free Sandbags to Help Keep Homes Safe

Palm Springs, CA

Palm Springs city leaders are reminding residents that free sandbags are available to help protect homes during heavy rain. The sandbags can be picked up at all Palm Springs fire stations across the city.

Residents can visit:

Fire Station 1 at 277 North Indian Canyon Drive
Fire Station 2 at 300 North El Cielo Road
Fire Station 3 at 590 East Racquet Club Road
Fire Station 4 at 1300 South La Verne Way
Fire Station 5 at 5800 Bolero Road.

Free sand is also available in the parking lot behind City Hall at 3200 East Tahquitz Canyon Way.

City officials say it is important to use sandbags the right way. Each sandbag should only be filled about two-thirds full. This helps keep the bag from breaking and makes it easier to stack. The sand should be packed tightly so the bag can help block water.

When placing sandbags, they should be stacked like bricks, with each row slightly offset. This makes the wall stronger and helps keep it from falling over. Residents are also encouraged to check the sandbags often. If water starts rising quickly or the bags begin to move or leak, it may be time to leave the area to stay safe.

The city reminds residents that sandbags should be used to protect buildings or guide water away from them. Sandbags should never be placed over drains or used to send water toward another home.

By preparing early and using sandbags correctly, Palm Springs residents can help keep their homes and neighborhoods safer during storms.
