FOR THE LOVE OF MODERNISM – BE SEATED opens February 14 at The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five

Palm Springs, CA

The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five in Palm Springs presents BE SEATED, an exhibition spotlighting a series of 12 Modernist Chairs by Master Printmaker Eric Rewitzer, curated by James Bacchi.

BE SEATED opens Valentine’s Day, Saturday February 14, at The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five FOR THE LOVE OF MODERNISM PARTY celebrating Modernism Week, 4-7pm.

For Curator James Bacchi, BE SEATED marks his third Solo Exhibition of work by Eric Rewitzer in Palm Springs. Avid Modernism Week art collectors and patrons will certainly recall Rewitzer’s sold out, MCM MONSTERS, (2024), and his sequel show THE PROTAGONISTS, (2025), exhibited at JAMES BACCHI CONTEMPORARY.

“When Rewitzer presented this series of Midcentury Chairs, I jumped”, says Bacchi. “This is a total departure from his last two exhibition.  Taking the spotlight off the likes of Godzilla, Ghidorah, Mothra and Gamera for an opportunity to showcase the designs of Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Arne Jacobsen and Frank Geahry – what can I say?  This show is a Curator’s Modernism Week Dream.”

Eric Rewitzer notes, “This body of work traces back to my childhood in West Michigan where these chairs were created and were simply a part of everyday life in the homes of friends and family.  My college art teacher and lifelong mentor, John Walon, collected them and often soke about their design and beauty, which sparked my early appreciation for them as objects of thoughtful design.  Years later, in the early 2000’s, after moving to California, I saw an exhibition at SFMOMA that presented these chairs in pristine museum quality condition.  That experience planted the seed for this Series, BE SEATED.”

Eric Rewitzer’s work continues to garner significant attention from exhibitions in the United States and Paris. His works are collected worldwide. The artist has been featured in prominent publications such as Palm Springs Life Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, as well as NBC-TV Palm Springs. His growing reputation in the art world is further cemented by his recent induction into the California Society of Printmakers and an upcoming feature in the California Printmaking Journal.

As for BE SEATED, to date, 5 from the edition of 10 of this series have been placed in noteworthy collections.  These include the collection of the Herman Miller Headquarters in Zeeland, Michigan, and the collection of Michael and Gabrielle Boyd, authors of Sitting on the Edge, considered a definitive catalogue of the era.  According to Bacchi, “This Palm Springs Show will offer 5 collectors an opportunity to acquire the remaining complete series of 12 from the edition of 10, while larger prints of each individual chair will be available in an edition of 5, signed and numbered by the artist.
