On the first day of office, President Donald Trump took significant actions that have raised concern and sparked outrage, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. In a series of executive orders, the 47th President of the United States declared that the government would officially recognize only two sexes—male and female—and outlined plans to end what he described as “radical and wasteful” diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within federal agencies.

The executive order on gender asserts that the U.S. government will “defend women’s rights and protect freedom of conscience” by implementing policies that use “clear and accurate language” to define men and women based on biological sex. The order claims that men are biologically male and women are biologically female, a stance that directly conflicts with broader interpretations of gender identity.

This move follows a flurry of executive orders signed by Trump shortly after his inauguration. Among these, several focus on transgender rights and seem to clash with federal law, drawing immediate backlash from LGBTQ+ advocates, particularly those representing transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals.

Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, Executive Director of the A4TE (Advocates for Transgender Equality), condemned the executive orders in a public statement, describing them as a concerted effort by “hateful extremists” to marginalize the trans community. Heng-Lehtinen argued that these orders are designed to make it more difficult for trans, nonbinary, and intersex individuals to fully participate in public life, from accessing healthcare and public facilities to being recognized in schools, sports, and the justice system.

“These executive orders represent an attack on our very existence,” Heng-Lehtinen said. “Trump’s administration is determined to deny the lived realities of trans, nonbinary, and intersex people. We are here, and we will not be erased.”

Heng-Lehtinen also emphasized that Trump’s efforts to impose rigid gender norms and definitions would have far-reaching consequences, particularly for all women and girls—both cisgender and transgender. He pointed to the damaging impact of such policies, noting that attempts to enforce strict gender binaries harm everyone by limiting the ways people are allowed to express their identity.

Furthermore, the executive orders include a measure that seeks to undo the Biden-era policy that allowed open military service for trans individuals. While the order does not officially reinstate the ban on transgender military personnel, it creates uncertainty for thousands of trans service members. The A4TE expressed its commitment to supporting trans service members, honoring their contributions, and fighting against any future actions that would undermine their ability to serve.

Despite the gravity of these executive orders, Heng-Lehtinen reassured the community that the legal fight would continue. “These executive orders do not change the law,” he said, emphasizing that the role of the executive branch is to enforce existing laws, not to create or dismantle them. He pledged that the A4TE and other advocacy groups would remain vigilant, monitoring the orders and using all available resources—from legal challenges to congressional efforts—to safeguard the rights and dignity of trans, nonbinary, and intersex individuals.

While the full effects of these executive orders remain to be seen, they have already ignited a significant conversation about the rights of transgender individuals, military service, and the role of federal policies in shaping gender identity in the United States. As the legal and social implications unfold, LGBTQ+ advocates remain resolute in their commitment to fight for inclusion, equality, and respect for all individuals, regardless of gender identity.
