Palm Springs, CA

On January 23, 2025, the Palm Springs City Council made an important decision that will shape the future of Palm Springs International Airport (PSP). By unanimously approving the Airport Master Plan’s conceptual development plan, the council set the stage for a major overhaul aimed at accommodating the growing needs of travelers while preserving the unique charm of the airport.

One of the key features of the plan is the approval of the hybrid Rental Car Center (RCC) alternative. This new design, which combines functionality with aesthetics, features a single-story structure with two sub-surface levels located just north of the terminal, near baggage claim. This move consolidates rental car services, making the airport more convenient for passengers, all while maintaining its walkability and distinctive midcentury modern style.

In the future, if demand increases, a second RCC structure could be built south of Kirk Douglas Way. However, the plan’s current approval only covers the general size and placement of airport components, not specific designs or funding plans. These details will be addressed in later stages, with the public having opportunities to weigh in at each step.

Harry Barrett Jr., Executive Director of PSP, emphasized the significance of the council’s decision, stating, “With the City Council’s approval, PSP takes another bold step forward, ensuring it remains not only a gateway for travelers but a source of pride for the communities we serve.”

The approval of the conceptual plan is just the first step. The next phase involves a comprehensive environmental analysis under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), which is expected to take about 12-18 months. Once that is completed, more detailed designs and financial planning will begin. The first phase of construction, which may include new gates, an expanded baggage claim, and international travel facilities, is expected to start by 2027 or 2028, with initial upgrades potentially in use by the early 2030s.

The development of the Master Plan has been a collaborative process since its inception in 2022, with input from community members, local businesses, airport tenants, and regional partners. Public engagement has played a crucial role, with nearly 40 presentations and three major public open houses, where over 350 people offered feedback and helped refine the plans. The result is a proposal that not only meets the airport’s operational needs but also respects the desires of the local community to preserve the iconic features of the airport, such as the Wexler terminal.

The hybrid RCC design was chosen because it balances the airport’s need for a functional rental car center while maintaining the walkability and aesthetic integrity that travelers appreciate. This forward-thinking approach to airport development is part of a larger vision to ensure that PSP remains a vital gateway for the Coachella Valley while providing sustainable growth that aligns with the values of the local community.

Looking ahead, Palm Springs International Airport will continue to grow and evolve, with a commitment to serving its passengers and community while preserving the unique spirit that makes PSP a special place for travelers from around the world.
