Palm Springs, CA

Republican Assemblymember Greg Wallis, who represents Palm Springs and surrounding areas, issued a public statement on June 1 in strong support of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, emphasizing unity, inclusion, and equality. Wallis’s message stands in contrast to the national stance taken by the Trump administration, which announced it will not formally recognize Pride Month this year.

“June is Pride Month,” Wallis wrote in a statement shared on social media. “It is a time to celebrate the strength, courage, and beauty of the LGBTQ+ community. It is a reminder that love in all its forms deserves to be seen, respected, and protected.”

Wallis, a first-term Republican representing a district with a significant LGBTQ+ population, added that Pride is “more than a celebration,” calling it “a statement that everyone deserves to live openly and authentically without fear or shame.”

His comments included recognition of both historical and ongoing struggles faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and a commitment to building “a future where every person feels safe, valued, and loved.” He concluded his message with a declaration of daily support: “I am proud to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community not just this month but every day.”

Wallis’s statement comes at a time when the Trump White House has taken a markedly different approach. During a recent press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the administration has “no plans” to issue a proclamation recognizing Pride Month.

“There are no plans for a proclamation for the month of June,” Leavitt stated. She added, “I can tell you this president is very proud to be a president for all Americans regardless of race, religion or creed.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Education announced on Tuesday that it will be recognizing June as Title IX Month, highlighting a different aspect of civil rights. In its announcement, the department said the month would be dedicated to “commemorating women and celebrating their struggle for, and achievement of, equal educational opportunity” under the landmark 1972 legislation. Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
