Cathedral City, CA
On Friday June 6th, reports and videos circulated online showing what appeared to be a significant presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol officers in Cathedral City and Palm Springs. Images and firsthand accounts suggested that federal immigration enforcement activities were underway in the Coachella Valley, prompting widespread concern and questions among residents.
Despite the visible presence of federal agents, ICE declined to confirm or comment on whether it was conducting operations in the area. The lack of official information led to speculation and unease within the community, particularly among immigrant populations.
In response, the City of Cathedral City and its Police Department released a joint statement on Friday evening to clarify their position and reassure the public. The statement emphasized that neither the city government nor the Cathedral City Police Department (CCPD) participates in any civil immigration enforcement activities.
“The Cathedral City Police Department does not enforce civil immigration laws, nor do we ask about an individual’s immigration status when responding to calls for service,” the statement read.
City officials stressed that immigration enforcement is solely the responsibility of federal agencies and that local authorities do not coordinate with, assist in, or receive advance notice of federal operations. The statement reaffirmed the city’s compliance with California’s sanctuary state laws and highlighted its ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion, and public trust.
Officials acknowledged the emotional toll such federal actions can have, particularly for undocumented individuals and families.
“We understand that yesterday’s events may have been frightening and stressful for many in our community,” the statement continued. “Our strength has always come from how we support one another during difficult times.”
The city encouraged residents to be aware of their rights, support their neighbors, and continue to view Cathedral City as a safe and welcoming place for all, regardless of legal status.
