Palm Springs… As temperatures continue to rise in Palm Springs, and you long for something cool, don’t miss ABSTRACT.ED, a Group Exhibition, presented by The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five in Palm Springs.

For ABSTRACT.ED, Resident Gallerist and Curator James Bacchi once again shows up and shows out his unique brand of showcasing selected works from his stable of California and New York Artists. His primary focus here are Painters.  They are John Wood, LOLA, Joanne Landis, Rebecca Katz, Serena Bocchino, Matthew Frederick and Maxine Solomon.  This Group, aside from playing way nice together, singularly follow their own notable paths to abstraction.

Maxine Solomon, Floating Through Time, 20”x20”, oil on canvas

In a work, titled Floating Through Time, Bay Area Artist Maxine Solomon transports the viewer to another place in time through more than thirty layers of oils between multiple layers of glazes.  Former San Francisco Art Critic, Kenneth Baker likens Solomons technique to Artist William Turner. This painting is exceptional!

Joanne Landis, Siren’s Lament, 60”x48”, oil on canvas

Joanne Landis appears to have a fearless approach to large scale figurative painting.  Siren’s Lament, one woman’s mythological adventure at sea, lures the viewer to a fauvist interpretation of a Siren’s duties.  Her heavy outlines recall her signature success as a former 1970’s New York Times Magazine fashion illustrator, turned painter.

Serena Bocchio, Waves of Joy, 42”x54”, enamel paint and porcelain chips on canvas

New York Artist Serena Bocchino transforms sound into visual form, using color, rhythm and movement to create immersive, expressive compositions. A synesthete, she experiences sound as color and form, a phenomenon that deeply informs her artistic language and allows her to create works that transcend traditional sensory boundaries. RHYTHM PULSE, a new documentary film by Richard Cooperman about the world of Serena Bocchino, was recently  awarded BEST SHORT DOCUMENTARY by the East Village New York Film Festival.

Matthew Frederick, Purple Passionflower, 32”x32”, oil on panel

Matthew Frederick presents an unconventional and amusing spin on the genre of still life painting by capturing the whimsical shadows and shapes cast from his muses.  His compositions are rendered with a resplendent color palette and generous application of paint and undulating brushwork, lending to a compelling emulation of the patterns and sensations inherent in nature..

Amidst this outstanding collection of paintings, sits a chair.  Not just any chair, but the Chaos Chair.

Konstantin Grcic, Chaos Chair, 35.5”x30”x30”, steel, frame tubing and leather

Chair or sculpture?  Shown at the Chicago Art Institute, minimalist Konstantin’s Grcic Chaos Chair is the essence of form and functional art.  Chaos appears to stretch the boundaries of convention and gives us something special – a seat with many faces, opulent in the front and rear view, and uninhibitedly cool  – as is ABSTRACT.ED, this impressive Group Show, in its entirety.

ABSTRACT.ED is on view through August at THE SHOPS at Thirteen Forty Five, 1345 Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA. Exhibition hours are:

Monday & Thursday, 10-3

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10-5
