Palm Springs, CA

If you’ve driven past Sunrise Way and Tahquitz Canyon Way recently, you’ve likely noticed the construction activity at the site of the Palm Springs Public Library. The community landmark at 300 S. Sunrise Way is in the midst of a major 18- to 36-month renovation, and the City of Palm Springs has shared images on its website showing what the completed library is expected to look like when it reopens in summer 2027.

According to the City, the renovation will completely transform the library while maintaining the charm of its original mid-century modern design. Renderings created by Group 4 Architecture + Research, Inc. showcase a bright, open, and contemporary facility — one that embraces both the city’s architectural heritage and the needs of a modern, tech-driven community.

The redesigned library will feature expansive glass walls, natural light-filled reading areas, and inviting outdoor spaces shaded by desert-friendly landscaping. Inside, flexible learning zones, community gathering rooms, and state-of-the-art technology centers will make the facility more accessible and engaging for residents of all ages.

The renovation project isn’t just cosmetic — it’s a full-scale modernization of an aging building that first opened in 1975. Upgrades include new HVAC systems, electrical and plumbing updates, ADA improvements, and energy-efficient enhancements throughout the property.

“This project allows us to preserve an important piece of Palm Springs history while adapting it for the next 50 years,” said a City representative. “The library has always been more than a place for books — it’s a place for connection, discovery, and community.”

The City of Palm Springs received $6.5 million in matching grant funds through the California State Library Grant Program, along with additional Measure J funds, to finance the renovation. Together, these investments ensure that the upgraded facility will serve as a model for sustainability, accessibility, and innovation.

Temporary Location Open During Construction

While the renovation is underway, the library has temporarily relocated to 4721 E. Palm Canyon Drive at Rimrock Plaza, at the corner of Gene Autry Trail. The temporary site opened earlier this fall and continues to offer lending services, public computers, and programs for children and adults.

Looking Ahead to 2027

When the doors reopen in summer 2027, the new Palm Springs Public Library will welcome visitors into a completely reimagined environment — one that combines the spirit of classic desert design with the flexibility and technology of a 21st-century learning hub.
