Palm Springs, CA

Palm Springs police have arrested a suspect in the October theft of two Yorkshire Terriers, while a second suspect remains at large and one of the dogs is still missing.

According to a department release, a man and woman were recorded on video around 10:30 a.m. on October 17 taking two Yorkies—Maggie and Winnie—after the pets accidentally escaped from their home. Detectives identified the suspects as Jose Marta Serrano, 41, of Palm Springs, and Cassaundra Evers, 44, of Cathedral City. Investigators believe the pair took the dogs intending to claim reward money they assumed would be offered.

Maggie was safely returned on November 1. On November 6, officers arrested Serrano, who was booked on felony charges of conspiracy to commit a crime (182(a)(1) PC), grand theft (487(e) PC), and a PRCS revocation hearing (3455(a) PC).

Police are continuing efforts to locate Evers for questioning regarding her role. Winnie—a light brown, nearly blonde Yorkshire Terrier, approximately three years old—remains missing.

Anyone with information about Evers’ whereabouts or sightings of Winnie is asked to contact Detective Brook Edney at Brooklyn.Edney@palmspringsca.gov.
