Palm Springs, CA

Barry Manilow has announced that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer and will undergo surgery to remove part of his lung.

The 82-year-old singer, a Palm Springs resident known for hits such as Copacabana and Mandy, shared the news in a statement posted to social media. Manilow said the cancer was discovered after a prolonged bout of bronchitis that led his doctor to order an MRI as a precaution.

“Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK,” Manilow wrote. “The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed.”

According to Manilow, the cancer was found at an early stage, and doctors do not believe it has spread. He said additional tests are being conducted to confirm that assessment. He added that his treatment plan does not include chemotherapy or radiation.

“So, that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns,” he wrote.

Manilow has postponed several upcoming live performances as he prepares for surgery. He indicated that he expects to return to the stage by Valentine’s Day for his long-running residency at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.

“I’m counting the days until I return to my home away from home at the Westgate Las Vegas for our Valentine’s weekend concerts,” he said.
