Palm Springs, CA
KGAY Radio is ringing in the New Year with a major upgrade, officially moving to a stronger signal at 103.1 FM beginning January 1, 2026. The change marks a new chapter for the locally owned, LGBTQ+ operated station as it enters its eighth year serving Palm Springs, the Coachella Valley, and listeners worldwide.
The move to 103.1 FM provides expanded coverage throughout the valley and includes an upgrade to an HD digital signal. KGAY previously broadcast on 106.5 FM, where it became one of the most successful low power translators in the country.
“KGAY has been one of the most successful low power translators in the country at 106.5 FM,” said station owner and operator Brad Fuhr. “The move to 103.1 FM allows for increased coverage throughout the valley and an upgrade to an HD digital signal.”
KGAY has been voted “Favorite Radio Station” for seven consecutive years in the Coachella Valley Independent’s annual Readers’ Poll. The station features a dance music format spanning from disco era hits of the 1970s through the 2000s and is streamed worldwide at KGAYPalmSprings.com.
Fuhr credited the station’s continued success to its audience and community ties. “KGAY owes its remarkable success to our extraordinarily loyal audience, advertisers and community partners,” he said. “As we step into our eighth year, the stronger FM signal allows us to continue championing the Coachella Valley’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community with the music, voices, and spirit that made KGAY a local favorite from the beginning.”
In February 2024, KGAY was profiled by The New York Times as “one of a kind,” noting it is “the only terrestrial radio station in America geared toward LGBTQ+ listeners and their allies.” On air personalities John Taylor and Chris Shebel will continue hosting morning and afternoon drive time shows.
KGAY’s former frequency at 106.5 FM will now be home to Sunny 106.5, a newly branded adult contemporary station. Formerly MeTV FM, the station is shifting formats to focus on music from the 1990s and 2000s, targeting listeners now in their 40s and 50s.

“We saw an opportunity to bring music back to Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley that hasn’t been heard on radio dials in some time,” Fuhr said. “The music of the 90s and 2000s is now a quarter century old, and our area businesses want to reach people who grew up with that music.”
Sunny 106.5 will feature a wide range of adult contemporary hits, from pop alternative to R&B and upbeat favorites, including artists such as Mariah Carey, Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox Twenty, Green Day, NSYNC, Adele, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd.
Award winning personality Patrick Evans will join Sunny 106.5 weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. while continuing his role with NewsChannel 3 First Alert Weather. E.J. Tyler will serve as program director and morning host. The station will also continue sponsoring and promoting local charities and community causes.
KGAY will continue streaming worldwide at KGAYPalmSprings.com, while Sunny 106.5 is available online at 1065Sunny.com. KGAY PSP operates as a public benefit corporation and is affiliated with GayDesertGuide.com and OMGPSP, a digital marketing agency also owned by Fuhr.
