Palm Springs, CA

The Palm Springs Police Department reported a wildlife sighting involving what appeared to be an adult mountain lion during the early morning hours between approximately 6:00 and 6:30 a.m. The sighting occurred near the Upper West Vista Chino area, in the vicinity of the 500 block of Vista Chino, according to police.

The individual who reported the sighting later lost visual contact with the animal. An Animal Control Officer responded and followed up on the report. Wildlife officials have been notified and are aware of the activity in the area. Authorities said the situation is currently being monitored.

Police officials reminded residents that wildlife activity is common throughout the desert region, including within residential neighborhoods of Palm Springs. As a precaution, residents are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings when outdoors.

Pet owners are advised to keep pets supervised and within view when outside, rather than allowing them to roam unattended.

Anyone who encounters a mountain lion or other wildlife is encouraged to report the sighting directly to the Wildlife Incident Reporting System through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife at wildlife.ca.gov. Reporting sightings helps wildlife officials track animal activity and determine whether further action is necessary.

The Palm Springs Police Department can also be notified at 760-327-1441 so officials are aware of the activity and can assist if needed. Additional information and safety resources are available through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Living with Wildlife program.
