Restaurants, coffee shops, music venues, and housing projects are reshaping the city’s historic center

Indio, CA

Downtown Indio is experiencing a revival. New restaurants, coffee shops, entertainment venues, and housing developments are helping bring new life to the historic center of the city.

For years, many buildings around Miles Avenue, the historic main street of Indio, sat quiet as shopping centers and neighborhoods expanded elsewhere in the city. Today, a mix of public investment and private development is helping transform downtown into a lively place where people can eat, gather, listen to music, and even live.

City leaders say more than $200 million in public and private investment has helped spark the revitalization of Downtown Indio, turning the area into a growing cultural and entertainment hub for the eastern Coachella Valley.

Infrastructure Already in Place

One advantage Downtown Indio already has is its existing infrastructure.

Several major civic institutions are located right in the downtown district, including Indio City Hall, the Riverside County courthouse, and the College of the Desert Indio campus.

These facilities bring hundreds of employees, students, and visitors into the area every day. Because of that, the basic ingredients for a thriving downtown already exist — including public buildings, streets, parking, and civic activity.

City leaders and local business owners say what the district needs most now is more restaurants, retail stores, and local businesses opening in the available spaces to serve the people who are already there.

Restaurants and Small Businesses Return

One of the clearest signs of the revitalization is the growing number of restaurants and small businesses opening in the district.

Popular spots like Gabino’s Crêperie, Indio Taphouse, and Italica are helping create a new dining and nightlife scene that draws both locals and visitors.

Another new business expected to open soon is Painted Dough, a gourmet donut shop that gained popularity through pop-up events around the Coachella Valley before deciding to open a permanent location in downtown.

These businesses are helping bring steady foot traffic back to the historic streets of Indio.

Coffee Shops Create Community Gathering Spaces

Coffee culture is also becoming an important part of downtown’s transformation.

Saguaro Coffee, a locally owned café, has become a popular gathering place where residents stop for specialty coffee and meet friends. The café adds to the growing number of places where people can spend time during the day in the downtown district.

Another local favorite, Everbloom Coffee, serves craft coffee and carefully roasted beans and has built a strong following among Coachella Valley coffee lovers.

Together, these cafés are helping turn Downtown Indio into a place where people gather not just for nightlife, but throughout the day.

A New Live Music Hub

Entertainment is also becoming a major part of downtown’s identity.

One of the newest additions is The Dune Room, located at 82707 Miles Avenue. The venue opened in late 2025 as a café and live music space designed to serve the community throughout the day and evening.

During the day, the Dune Room operates as a café serving coffee and fresh bagels. At night, the space transforms into an intimate live music venue that hosts both local and national artists.

The 250-person venue was created by music industry veteran Ron Mesh, who spent decades working in live music production and touring.

Organizers say the space was designed to be more than just a nightclub. It is meant to be a community gathering place that supports local musicians and brings residents together through live performances and events.

Outdoor Events and Entertainment

Downtown Indio is also home to Center Stage, an outdoor performance venue that hosts concerts, festivals, and community events throughout the year.

Events such as food truck gatherings, concerts, and local festivals bring people into the downtown district on evenings and weekends.

Nearby venues like the Indio Performing Arts Center also add to the entertainment scene, hosting concerts, theater productions, and community shows.

New Housing Rising Downtown

Housing is another important part of the revitalization plan.

A major project now under construction is Skyline at Bliss & Oasis, a new mixed-use apartment development located at the corner of Bliss Avenue and Oasis Street in the heart of downtown.

The development will include 64 apartment units, offering studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom homes designed for residents who want to live close to restaurants, events, and downtown businesses.

The project will also include amenities such as a pool, fitness center, rooftop gathering areas, and ground-floor retail space.

Developers say the apartments are designed to create a walkable lifestyle where residents can live within steps of restaurants, coffee shops, music venues, and civic buildings like City Hall and the courthouse.

A Downtown Designed for the Future

City planners have long believed that adding housing downtown is key to creating a vibrant urban center.

When people live in the area, they help support nearby restaurants, cafés, and entertainment venues year-round.

With civic institutions already in place, new businesses opening, and housing projects rising, Downtown Indio is beginning to look very different from just a decade ago.

A Historic District With New Energy

The revitalization of Downtown Indio has been years in the making. Today, the area is once again becoming a destination for residents and visitors in the Coachella Valley.

With restaurants, coffee shops, music venues, community events, and new housing developments taking shape, the historic center of Indio is steadily coming back to life.

And according to city leaders and local business owners, the momentum is only just beginning.
