California

Love him or hate him, in a dramatic reversal, Elon Musk announced Tesla’s return to California. Although it is not a total return, it is a significant one. Tesla’s headquarters will remain in Austin, TX after leaving California two years ago after a dispute with Alameda County are now opening up their new Global Engineering and AI headquarters in the former Hewlett Packard building in Silicon Valley in California.

At the time, Musk who used his favorite social media platform Twitter to air his grievances wrote on May 9, 2020, “Tesla is filing a lawsuit against Alameda County immediately. The unelected & ignorant “Interim Health Officer” of Alameda is acting contrary to the Governor, the President, our Constitutional freedoms & just plain common sense!” He went onto write at the time, “Frankly, this is the final straw. Tesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas/Nevada immediately. If we even retain Fremont manufacturing activity at all, it will be dependen on how Tesla is treated in the future. Tesla is the last carmaker left in CA.”

Now, the CEO reversed course calling his move into the old HP building a “poetic transition from the company that founded Silicon Valley to Tesla.”

Governor Gavin Newsom joined Tesla CEO Elon Musk on a tour of Tesla’s new global engineering and AI headquarters in Palo Alto. Since 2009, California has worked with Tesla to help create the future of the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) market. Now, California will remain the home of Tesla as their new global engineering and AI headquarters works to develop the technology of the future.

Governor Newsom touted the decision saying “The future happens in California first. We’re changing the world through our historic investments, our conveyor belt for talent, and partnerships with companies like Tesla. The state continues to be the world’s innovation hub, charging the electric vehicle revolution, and dominating the industry in every category – all while keeping the same goal in mind: ensuring a cleaner, greener, and healthier place to live for future generations.”

Locally, Tesla’s Dealership is in Cathedral City at 68080 Perez Rd, Cathedral City, CA 92234 down the block from the burgeoning First Friday Perez Art District Art Walk.
