Drag shows have a long and rich history, dating back to ancient times when men dressed as women for various theatrical performances. However, the modern drag show as we know it today emerged in the 19th century in Europe and America, particularly in the cabaret and vaudeville scenes.
In the early 20th century, drag shows became popular in underground gay and lesbian communities, where they provided a space for queer expression and entertainment. During this time, performers often faced legal and social discrimination, but their shows continued to attract large and loyal audiences.
The 1960s through the present saw the rise of the drag queen as a prominent figure in popular culture, with performers like Divine, RuPaul, and Lady Bunny gaining widespread recognition. Drag shows also played an important role in the Stonewall Riots of 1969, a pivotal moment in the gay rights movement.
Throughout the 20th century, drag shows continued to evolve, incorporating elements of comedy, satire, and political commentary. Today, drag shows are celebrated as an art form and a symbol of queer identity, with a thriving scene in many cities around the world. Drag performers have also gained mainstream visibility through television shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race and Pose.
Today Drag shows have come under fire in conservative states. “Legislation to place new limits and restrictions on drag performances has been introduced in at least 10 states,” and in certain cases trying to restrict drag shows on public property.
Today, in Downtown Palm Springs, the Desert Stonewall Democrats, a LGBTQ Democratic Political Action Organization serving the Coachella Valley is fighting back. The group is putting on the Drag4Drag – The Rally event starting at 5pm tonight in Downtown Palm Springs at the Forever Marilyn statue to counter protest and stand in solidarity with the drag community that is facing a backlash from conservatives.
