Want to find your own way to celebrate the end of Pride Month at home in front of the television? Why not celebrate by watching the classic “San Junipero” episode of Black Mirror that takes place in season 3 of the dystopian anthology series on Netflix.
The episode is described as, “In a seaside town in 1987, a shy young woman and an outgoing party girl strike up a powerful bond that seems to defy the laws of space and time.”
Without giving away too much, “San Junipero” is an emotionally charged episode set in a not-too-distant future. The story revolves around two women, Yorkie and Kelly, who embark on a complex journey within a beach resort town.
Yorkie (played by Mackenzie Davis), is a shy and introverted young woman who is new to San Junipero while Kelly (played by Guga Mbatha-Raw) is a lively and outgoing partygoer who catches Yorkie’s attention. The two strike up an unexpected bond.
As the narrative progresses, the truth about San Junipero and the two characters unravel. “San Junipero” delves into profound themes of love, identity, and the nature of reality. It challenges the audience to contemplate the boundaries between life and death, and leaving them with a lingering sense of both hope and melancholy.
