“Three’s Company” actress, successful businesswomen, and long time Palm Springs resident Suzanne Somers passed away early Sunday morning at age 76.
On behalf of her family, long time publicist R. Couri Hay wrote in a statement, “Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 15th. She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years.”
“Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family,” the statement continued. “Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th. Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”
For many years, the famous actress lived in Palm Springs in the Mesa neighborhood until she put her home up for sale in 2021. In a story published by homes and gardens in 2021, it said, “Suzanne Somers invites you to come knock on her door… The legendary actress, author and business woman opens up exclusively to Homes and Gardens about why she’s selling her beloved Palm Springs estate – a property which she and her TV-producer husband Alan Hamel purchased more than four decades ago.”
Back in July, 2023 Somers posted on her instagram that her cancer was back. She wrote, “As you know, I had breast cancer two decades ago, and every now and then it pops up again, and I continue to bat it down,” she wrote. “I have used the best alternative and conventional treatments to combat it. This is not new territory for me. I know how to put on my battle gear and I’m a fighter.”
She also wrote of her husband, Alan Hamel of fifty years saying, “Alan has been by my side every step of the way. I can’t even explain how much he has done for me. If it’s even possible, we are even closer than ever.”
Palm Springs Mayor Grace Elena Garner released this statement on the passing of Suzanne Somers:
“The City of Palm Springs is heartbroken to learn of the passing of iconic actress, author, health guru, and long-time resident Suzanne Somers, a much loved member of our community for more than 40 years,” said Mayor Grace Garner,” who noted over the decades Somers was a huge supporter of the Palm Springs Police and Fire departments, served as 2013 Celebrity Grand Marshal of the Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade, and helped christen the BUZZ Trolley in 2014.
A bright star in our city has left us, but we are forever thankful to Suzanne for always supporting Palm Springs and sharing her love for our uniquely special city with the world. She was truly a part of the magic that makes Palm Springs like no place else and we will never forget her. On behalf of our residents, we send our deepest condolences to Suzanne’s husband Alan and her family.”
Suzanne Somers would have been 77 on her birthday Monday, October 16th.
