I have been a huge fan of the Eagles since my high school days in Dalton, Georgia. The band’s debut album “Eagles” was released on June 1, 1972, at the end of my sophomore year in high school. That year, my best friend Randy Thornton and I worked summer jobs at a carpet mill in Dalton. We had the album playing on our eight track tape players at work and in each of our Oldsmobile Cutlass Supremes. It was such a good summer and the songs on that album became the soundtrack of our lives in those hazy hot North Georgia summer days.
I first saw the Eagles perform live in 1974 on a double billed show with Fleetwood Mac at the Omni in Atlanta and the show sold out weeks in advance. That was a truly amazing show from two now incredibly iconic groups. When the Eagles’ January 16, 2024 tour date was announced for Acrisure, I knew I had to be there and I purchased tickets the day they went on sale.
The Acrisure Arena show was sold out and you could see the excitement in the fans faces when we arrived for the show. Most of the crowd looked to be within 10 years of my age give or take. It was like a giant high school reunion of kindred souls.
Steely Dan was the opening act and played a good number of their most memorable songs, ending their set with the classic Reelin’ in the Years.
Original Eagles members, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit are still with the band. Since the 2016 death of founding member, guitarist and vocalist Glenn Frey, his son Deacon Frey performs with the group. Additionally, Country musician and Multi-Grammy Award winning artist Vince Gill does an amazing job of covering Glenn’s vocals.
The Eagles kicked off their set with Seven Bridges Road and then led into Take It Easy, which was written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey. Perfection!
One of These Nights and Lyin’ Eyes sounded as wonderful as they always have. A highlight of the show was when J.D. Souther came on stage to join in on Best of my Love and New Kid in Town. These classics were followed by the sultry Witchy Woman and Peaceful Easy Feeling and the soulful Tequila Sunrise.
A really touching moment was when Don Henley told the crowd that they were dedicating the timeless Boys of Summer to Jimmy Buffett who passed away last September. Joe Walsh was his crazy wacky self and was excellent on Life’s Been Good.

The sound and visuals on Hotel California were spot on and the song is quintessential Eagles.
My high school bestie Randy passed away too young at the age of 49 and he would have loved this show. It truly was a wonderful way to spend a Tuesday evening in the desert.
