Thermal, CA
One of the most powerful windstorms to strike Southern California in recent years compelled President Joe Biden on Tuesday to cancel a planned trip from Los Angeles to the Coachella Valley. The president had intended to formalize the creation of two new national monuments, including one located just south of Joshua Tree National Park.
President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden touched down at Los Angeles International Airport aboard Air Force One at 9:32 p.m. on Monday with the intention of traveling to Thermal on Tuesday afternoon. The visit was intended to officially declare the establishment of the Chuckwalla National Monument near Joshua Tree and the Sáttítla National Monument in Northern California. These monuments are set to preserve a combined 848,000 acres of land deemed to have significant scientific, cultural, ecological, and historical value.
However, the intense Santa Ana winds sweeping through the region prompted the White House to initially adjust the plan, announcing that Biden would deliver the monument declaration from the Los Angeles area instead. Later, the White House decided to postpone the event entirely, rescheduling it for the following week to ensure the presence of key stakeholders. Details about the rescheduled event have yet to be shared.
At one point, President Biden had already boarded a vehicle in his motorcade in West Los Angeles, prepared to embark on the trip to Thermal, but ultimately returned to his hotel. It remains uncertain when he plans to depart the Los Angeles area.
Meanwhile, a dangerous and swiftly moving wildfire ignited in Los Angeles on Tuesday, endangering residential areas and forcing the evacuation of thousands, leading city and state leaders to issue an emergency declaration.
Intense winds swept across Southern California well into the night, complicating efforts by firefighters to contain the rapidly spreading inferno. The Pacific Palisades blaze, which expanded to nearly 3,000 acres by 6:30 p.m. local time, was initially reported just before 11 a.m. and quickly spurred widespread evacuations, extending into the Malibu area.
