The Palm Springs Police Department has been informed that the Cathedral City Police Department has arrested one of our off-duty staff members in connection with a fatal accident that occurred on Thursday, November 28, in Cathedral City. This tragic event involved two off-duty civilian staff members of our department, Nicholas Griego and Juliana Granados, and resulted in the death of Nicholas Griego. Following this arrest, Granados has been placed on administrative leave

The Cathedral City Police Department led a criminal investigation into the collision. As a result of their investigation, Granados has been charged with several serious crimes, including a Watson Murder, a form of second-degree murder. 

The Palm Springs Police Department fully cooperated with the efforts of the Cathedral City Police Department’s independent investigation. We remain committed to accountability and transparency while respecting the integrity of the legal process.

The Palm Springs Police Department holds all personnel to the highest standards, both on and off duty. We are acutely aware of the profound impact this incident has had on everyone involved, including the broader community.

“I am deeply disappointed by the actions that led to the heartbreaking loss of one of our staff members,” said Chief Andy Mills. “Our department holds its staff to the highest standards, regardless of whether they are on or off duty. We are taking swift action to address this matter appropriately.”

Although personnel regulations prohibited the department from taking certain administrative actions before formal charges were filed, the department has taken decisive steps to ensure accountability. Granados has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of an internal personnel investigation.
