Palm Springs, CA

A Palm Springs Police Department officer was injured Tuesday afternoon during an altercation with a suspect while responding to a disturbance call in the 1500 block of North Sunrise Way.

At approximately 2:40 PM, officers arrived at the scene after reports of a male individual causing a disturbance and refusing to vacate the premises. The man, identified as Phillip Smith, 41, allegedly became aggressive during the initial contact and suddenly produced a knife, stabbing one of the officers in the hand.

Despite the surprise attack, officers exercised restraint and quickly subdued Smith using minimal force. He was taken into custody without further incident.

The injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and is currently listed in stable condition. Authorities expect a full recovery.

Smith has been arrested and is expected to face charges including assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. Investigators indicated that additional charges may be filed as the case develops.
