A new chapter in LGBTQ nightlife is unfolding in Cathedral City as the famous bar Eagle Cathedral City prepares to open in the same space once occupied by the beloved Barracks Bar, which closed after three decades of community and leather-kink culture.

The Eagle name carries a rich legacy in LGBTQ+ nightlife, with roots tracing back to the early 1970s. The original Eagle’s Nest opened in New York City in 1970, setting the tone for a network of independently owned “Eagle” bars that became synonymous with leather, kink, and masculine gay subculture. These venues often serve as safe, affirming spaces for fetish communities while celebrating freedom of expression and camaraderie. Today, the Eagle brand can be found in cities across the United States, including Eagle NYC, The Eagle LA, San Diego Eagle, Denver Eagle in Colorado, among many other locations. Each Eagle operates independently but shares a common cultural thread, making Eagle Cathedral City’s arrival a continuation of a national tradition.

From Closure to Revival

• End of an Era
  The Barracks Bar, originally opened in 1992 as “Wolf’s Den,” was a vibrant focal point for the LGBTQ+ leather and nightlife community. It officially closed on August 4, 2024, after 31 years, following disputes over its liquor license and occupancy requirements. Owner Scott Murchison cited regulatory burdens and state-level scrutiny as key factors in the closure.
• Regulatory Pressures
  City officials and media reported that Cathedral City authorities demanded extensive building upgrades—estimated at over $100,000—to meet occupancy and safety codes, while the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) was investigating multiple complaints of lewd conduct and improper alcohol service.

Projected Opening Date
