Rancho Mirage, CA
Rancho Mirage has officially broken ground on a significant parking expansion project designed to improve access and support the city’s long-term vision for a new downtown district.
Located near Rancho Mirage Community Park and the iconic Elephant Car Wash, the project will add approximately 252 parking spaces, including ADA-accessible spots and electric vehicle charging stations. Plans also include lighted crosswalks for improved pedestrian safety and enhanced landscaping to beautify the surrounding area.
“This is going to enhance the area where there’s been limited parking for many years,” said Project Manager Charlie Nesbitt. “The space will also be used for a variety of city events, giving us more flexibility for the future.”
City officials say the expansion will help alleviate long-standing parking shortages, especially during peak tourism seasons and large community gatherings. Residents have welcomed the news, noting the added convenience and accessibility the new lot will bring.
Construction is expected to take about three months, with traffic impacts anticipated along Button Drive and San Luis Rey Drive. Officials are encouraging drivers to avoid the area when possible to help maintain traffic flow during the build.
Once completed, the project is expected to not only meet the city’s growing parking needs but also serve as a key step toward transforming Rancho Mirage into a more vibrant, walkable downtown destination.
