A pedestrian was killed Friday night after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Palm Canyon Drive near Via Las Palmas, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

At approximately 9:34 p.m., officers were dispatched to the scene of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision. The incident occurred in a marked crosswalk that is equipped with a pedestrian-activated lighting system. Investigators noted that the system did not appear to have been used at the time of the collision.

Preliminary findings revealed that the victim, an adult male visiting from out of state, was crossing eastbound in the crosswalk when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision. The Palm Springs Police Department Traffic Division is leading the investigation.
