Palm Springs, CA

If you have ever visited Provincetown, Massachusetts, you may already know Joe Coffee, the iconic seaside café on the corner of Commercial Street and Winthrop Street known for its strong coffee, fresh baked goods, and lively community atmosphere. Soon, that same spirit will arrive in Palm Springs in the slowly transitioning Sunny Dunes District that currently is home to popular community small businesses such as Townie Bagel, Tool Shed, Q Trading, Plant This, Gear, Jaco Moretti arts, among others. The new Joe Coffee shop will be located behind Jaco Moretti Arts and will be visible from Sunny Dunes Road.

The Palm Springs café will occupy 577 East Sunny Dunes Road, a building designed by noted Palm Springs architect Howard Lapham, making the location part of the city’s architectural history. Lapham was a prominent architect whose work helped form the vision of Palm Springs..

Joe Coffee is owned by lifelong friends Mark Shaw and Glenn Siegmund, who remain closely involved in the café’s day-to-day operations. Customers at the original Provincetown location often see the two working behind the counter and helping create the welcoming atmosphere the shop is known for.

Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Shaw and Siegmund about why they chose Palm Springs and the Sunny Dunes District for their next location and what customers can expect from their first West Coast venture.

Here is what Shaw and Siegmund shared about bringing Joe Coffee to Palm Springs:

Eric Gray: Joe Coffee has been part of Provincetown since 1998. What does it mean to you personally to bring something so beloved into Palm Springs?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: I spend my winters here in beautiful Palm Springs. I am retired and I really enjoy working with the community. It gives me joy to be around people and bring people together so this is a natural next step.

Eric Gray: Why did you choose the Sunny Dunes District to open Joe’s Coffee?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: Sunny Dunes District is a vibrant part of Palm Springs that is ready for revitalization that we want to be part of. Our building owners, (Harvey & Jon) are also Ptown residents and Joe Coffee customers. They welcomed us into their building in the Sunny Dunes district to help make this happen.

Eric Gray: How do you see Joe’s Coffee adding to the synergy of the Sunny Dunes District?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: Our dream is that Joe Coffee will provide a platform and space where the community can gather & flourish. We plan to attract new customers that may not have visited this part of Palm Springs before. They will se a vibrant community, bike trails a variety of businesses, and a wonderful night life!

Eric Gray: Food is an important part of the Joe Coffee experience, from house-made baked goods to vegan and gluten-free offerings. Can Palm Springs expect to see those same customer favorites? Will there be any changes to the menu, and if so, what types of food items do you plan to feature?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: In addition to being well known for our coffee roasts, our customers will also enjoy our in-house baked traditional goods. We will absolutely bring the same menu to Palm Springs in addition to offering west coast favorites by gathering input from our customers.

Eric Gray: Joe Coffee is known for being dog-friendly, kid-friendly, LGBTQ friendly and welcoming to everyone. How important was inclusivity when choosing Palm Springs as your next location?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: Inclusivity is extremely important to Joe Coffee. It is one of our guiding principles for both Provincetown and Palm Springs locations. We are a safe & comfortable space for all people.

Eric Gray: You are very hands-on as ownership goes. What role will you personally play day-to-day at the Palm Springs location?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: I plan to be very hands on here in Palm Springs to ensure the brand & customer experience is the same as in Provincetown. The team we bring onboard will be expected to have the same qualities. Think of me in Sunny Dunes as the Joe Coffee greeter!!

Eric Gray: You’re embracing the “third-wave” coffee movement, where the story behind the cup matters. How will customers experience that philosophy in Palm Springs?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: We will be bringing our same wonderful coffee blends to Palm Springs, provided by Indigo Roasters, located in Western Massachusetts. Owned by Lourdes & Flo, they are an independent artisan coffee business, roasting only to order & providing USDA organic fair trade & kosher roasts. We are proud to be partners with Indigo.

Eric Gray: Baristas play a big role in education and connection at Joe Coffee. What kind of team and customer experience are you aiming to build here?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: Our plan is to employ baristas who understand the craft of coffee / espresso drink making. They will consider it an art to provide customized beverages with a smile & a welcoming customer experience. They will see themselves as part of the Joe Coffee family.

Eric Gray: Community involvement is clearly important to you and your partners. How do you hope Joe Coffee will show up for the Palm Springs community beyond serving coffee?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: Joe Coffee in the Sunny Dunes district will provide a platform & space to showcase local talent (artists, musicians, grass root gatherings, civic organizations, etc.) similar to what we have developed in Provincetown. We can’t wait!

Eric Gray: For locals and visitors who haven’t experienced Joe Coffee yet, what do you hope they feel the first time they sit down with a cup in the Sunny Dunes District?

Glenn Siegmund & Mark Shaw: We hope our 1st time customers in Palm Springs immediately think of 3 things:

– Wow what a great location in a wonderful neighborhood we just discovered
– What a friendly barista who made me a tasty drink
– What an exceptional drink I was just made!

Joe’s Coffee hopes to open in late December 2026, but in the meantime they can be found online on Facebook, Instagram, or on their original Provincetown website.
