Palm Springs, CA

Kalura Trattoria’s brand new patio on Palm Canyon Drive is undergoing construction since June 16th to comply with building and fire codes with an estimated completion later on this summer. The project is part of a larger effort to accommodate the anticipated influx of theatergoers following the long-awaited reopening of the Plaza Theatre this December.

Owner Pino Amadeo spoke about the transformation, saying that while they had the original patio for 23 years, everyone is now happy with the outcome. He also noted that with the Plaza Theatre set to open its doors, they expect more foot traffic, not just for their restaurant, but for the entire downtown area.

The Plaza Theatre’s multi-million-dollar restoration, which began several years ago, is near completion. The historic venue is scheduled for its grand reopening on December 1st, 2025 with upcoming shows from An Evening with Lily Tomlin, to A John Waters Christmas. However, during the planning phase, city officials determined that the original layout of the patio didn’t meet the necessary fire and safety codes. Specifically, there needed to be 20 feet of clear space around the theater entrance to ensure the safety of visitors and allow for proper crowd flow.

The patio expansion is designed to address these concerns while maintaining Kalura Trattoria’s inviting outdoor atmosphere.

The ongoing work has not put a damper on the restaurant’s business, with many patrons still enjoying Kalura Trattoria’s popular dishes inside and outside on the existing patio while observing the transformation. Once completed, the patio will feature a sizeable seating area, providing room for guests to enjoy their meals while contributing to the revitalization of downtown.

Once the new patio gets completed, the older patio will be torn down.

As the Plaza Theatre restoration nears its final stages, Kalura Trattoria’s upgraded patio will be ready for the influx of theatergoers and the renewed vibrancy of downtown. Both local businesses and residents get to look forward to the grand reopening this December, marking a new chapter in the revitalization of the downtown district.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Plaza Theatre’s renovation project nears its conclusion.
