Palm Desert, CA

Congressman Raul Ruiz (CA-25), who represents a portion of the Coachella Valley and Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35) will visit the Adelanto Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Processing Center on Friday, July 11, at 9:00 AM PST, to conduct oversight and assess the treatment of detainees held at the facility. The visit takes place amid an increase in ICE deportations and heightened concerns about the conditions in which individuals are being detained.

The visit follows a recent denial of entry after a new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy extended the required notice for congressional visits from 72 hours to seven days. Congressman Ruiz’s office submitted the request under the longstanding 72-hour requirement but was denied access under the updated policy.

As Members of Congress, Ruiz and Torres are constitutionally authorized to conduct unannounced oversight visits to federal facilities, including those operated by ICE. The recent policy change has raised concerns among lawmakers and advocacy groups, who argue it reduces transparency and limits the ability to monitor treatment and conditions within detention centers.

This visit also comes as ICE continues deporting individuals who are in the United States without legal status. Advocacy organizations have raised alarms over the potential for inhumane conditions and treatment within ICE facilities. These concerns are particularly significant for individuals seeking asylum or fleeing violence, who may face prolonged detention under conditions criticized as unsafe or degrading.

Some critics have drawn historical comparisons to past failures to protect vulnerable populations. The story of Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who died of typhus fever in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February 1945, is often cited as a reminder of the consequences of systemic neglect and inhumanity. The Holocaust, in which six million Jews were murdered by the Nazi regime, led to the creation of the modern state of Israel and was a driving force behind the Zionist movement’s goal of establishing a Jewish homeland.

Concerned critics call for increased oversight and policy reforms to ensure detainees are treated with dignity and in accordance with legal and humanitarian standards.

The visit will include a press conference with immigration advocates and community leaders, including Javier Hernandez, Executive Director of the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice (IC4IJ), and representatives from Inland Congregations United for Change (ICUC).
