Palm Springs, CA
Palm Springs travelers will soon have a new reason to raise a glass before heading home. Southwest Airlines has selected Palm Springs as one of a limited number of West Coast destinations to launch its first-ever “Sip and Ship” program, making it easier for visitors to bring wine home from the desert at no extra cost.
Beginning April 24, passengers flying out of Palm Springs International Airport can check one case of wine, up to 12 bottles, free of charge. The new perk is designed to simplify travel for visitors who want to take home local wine finds without worrying about extra baggage fees.
To participate, travelers must pack their wine in a standard wine shipping box or a wine-specific suitcase that meets airline checked baggage requirements. The program mirrors a growing trend among airlines to enhance the travel experience by making it easier to transport regional specialties.
While Palm Springs is not traditionally known as a wine-producing hub like Northern California, the Coachella Valley has increasingly leaned into its proximity to Southern California wine regions and its own emerging boutique offerings. Local restaurants, resorts, and specialty shops across Palm Springs and nearby communities like Palm Desert and La Quinta feature curated wine selections that appeal to visitors looking for a taste of the region.
Southwest’s announcement comes as the airline continues expanding its California footprint, including new service in Sonoma County. The Sip and Ship program is part of a broader push to connect travelers with destination-driven experiences, especially in markets where food and beverage tourism plays a growing role.
Palm Springs joins a list of participating airports across California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, including major hubs like Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. However, its inclusion highlights the desert city’s continued evolution as more than just a festival and resort destination, positioning it as a place where lifestyle, leisure, and now even take-home indulgences are part of the experience.
For travelers heading out of Palm Springs this spring and beyond, the message is simple: enjoy the desert, find a bottle you love, and take a piece of it home with you—no extra fees required.
