The Shawshank Redemption begins with a terrible injustice, but its lasting power comes from what happens afterward. A man enters prison for a crime he says he did not commit, and he must decide whether the walls surrounding him will also define the life remaining within him. On Friday, September 25, Desert Theatreworks will open its 2026–2027 season with this deeply human story in the intimate 127-seat Blackbox Theatre at the Indio Performing Arts Center.
Adapted by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns from Stephen King’s acclaimed novella, The Shawshank Redemption follows Andy Dufresne, a successful banker who is wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life at Shawshank State Penitentiary. Andy enters the prison as an outsider, surrounded by men who have learned that survival often requires them to surrender some part of themselves. He soon meets Red, a longtime prisoner who understands how Shawshank works, what it takes from the men confined there and how difficult it can be to imagine a life beyond its walls.
The friendship between Andy and Red does not grow from one grand moment. It develops slowly over years of confinement, disappointment, danger and shared experience. Through that friendship, each man begins to see possibilities that neither could have reached alone, and hope becomes more than an idea. It becomes a way of preserving their dignity and remaining human in a place designed to take both away.
This is not a story that avoids darkness or pretends that endurance is easy. Shawshank can be brutal, frightening and cruel, and the production confronts the violence, corruption and abuse of power within the prison directly. Yet the story also contains humor, loyalty, intelligence and unexpected tenderness because even under the worst circumstances, people continue to find reasons to care for one another. That difficult journey from injustice and confinement toward friendship and hope is what has given The Shawshank Redemption its enduring place in the hearts of audiences.
Directed by Desert Theatreworks Artistic Director Lance Phillips, with the assistance of Wesley Spencer who appears as Dawkins. The production brings the story into one of the company’s most intimate performance spaces. With only 127 audience members at each performance, there is little distance between the people watching and the men living inside Shawshank. The audience will not observe this story from somewhere safely removed from the action; it will share the room, feel the pressure of the prison closing around its inhabitants and witness the smallest moments in which their humanity manages to survive.
The production uses a highly visual and atmospheric approach to establish the harsh physical reality of the prison while allowing the personal relationships within it to remain at the center of the experience. The confinement of Shawshank is not simply represented by walls, uniforms and locked doors. It is carried in the way the men move, the way power is exercised over them and the ways they learn to protect the private parts of themselves that the institution cannot be allowed to own.
Andrew Weiss leads the company as Andy Dufresne, with Jarrol Taylor Jr. portraying Red and Ron Young appearing as Warden Stammas. Together, these three characters establish the production’s central struggle between institutional control, personal conscience and the fragile possibility of freedom. Andy and Red provide the emotional heart of the story, while Warden Stammas represents the authority of a system determined to control not only the bodies of the men inside Shawshank, but also their choices, their futures and their understanding of what is possible.
The company also features John Hadley as Hadley, Stephen Blackwell as Bogs, Shel Safir as Brooksie, Aaron Hadley as Entwistle and Kevin Mann as Rooster. Wesley Spencer appears as Dawkins, Maddox Phillips portrays Tommy, Erik “Milo” Milosevich plays Rico and Frank Catale appears as Pinky. Each member of this 12-man ensemble contributes to the larger life of the prison, creating a community in which danger and humor, cruelty and compassion, despair and hope can exist side by side.
Together, the cast brings audiences into a world where every relationship carries consequences and every act of kindness has meaning. The production never loses sight of the fact that The Shawshank Redemption is ultimately about more than a prison, an injustice or even an escape. It is about the people who help us survive what we could not survive alone, and the part of the human spirit that refuses to accept that the worst thing that has happened to us must become the final definition of our lives.
As the opening production of the Desert Theatreworks season, The Shawshank Redemption offers audiences the full power of live theatre: a compelling story, a committed ensemble and an intimate environment in which there is nowhere for the truth of the experience to hide. It is an ambitious and deeply human beginning to the new season, and it promises to be one of the productions Coachella Valley audiences will not want to miss.
PERFORMANCE INFORMATION
The Shawshank Redemption opens Friday, September 25, and continues through Sunday, October 4, 2026, for eight performances only. The production runs approximately two hours and 45 minutes, including one intermission.
Performances will be presented on September 25 at 7:30 p.m., September 26 at 7:30 p.m. and September 27 at 2:00 p.m. The second week includes performances on October 1 at 7:30 p.m., October 2 at 7:30 p.m., October 3 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and October 4 at 2:00 p.m.
The production is recommended for audiences ages 16 and older because it contains strong language, violence, sexual violence, discussion of suicide and other mature themes associated with life inside a prison. These elements are integral to the world of the story and to the difficult circumstances its characters must confront.
